name-generator.net is built on top of legitimate public-domain government data and community-licensed datasets. Where licenses require attribution, we provide it below.
Public domain (US government)
- US Social Security Administration · Popular Baby Names via aruljohn/popular-baby-names. Top 1000 first names per gender per year, aggregated 2018-2022. Powers the English first name pool.
- US Census 2010 · Most Common Surnames via fivethirtyeight/data. Top 5000 surnames by frequency. Powers the English surname pool.

- MatthiasWinkelmann/firstname-database — repo (CC BY-SA 4.0). 46,000+ first names with gender + per-country popularity scores across 50+ countries. Powers 17 of our origin first-name pools.
- Wikipedia contributors — articles on given names and surnames by language (CC BY-SA 4.0). Powers Japanese, curated top-common surnames, baby name etymology, and warrior cats lore.
- Warriors Wiki on Fandom (CC BY-SA 4.0) — community-curated prefix and suffix lists for the Warrior Cats name generator.

credits.txt. - sigpwned/popular-names-by-country-dataset — repo. Ranked surnames + forenames by country (used for Vietnamese top surnames and 25+ origin coverage).
- railsmechanic/firstnames-to-gender — repo. 89K first names with gender across 53 country codes. Powers 25 new origins including Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Czech, Croatian, Albanian, Finnish, Armenian, Kazakh, and more.
- duyet/vietnamese-namedb — repo. Vietnamese given names with proper diacritics. Powers the Vietnamese first-name pool.

- Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition System Reference Document 5.1, released by Wizards of the Coast under the Open Game License v1.0a and Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Powers our fantasy race naming inspiration (Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Halfling, Dragonborn, Tiefling, Gnome).

- AI name generators use Llama 3.1 8B Instruct (Fast) via Cloudflare Workers AI. Model is from Meta under the Llama 3 Community License.
Curated / hand-built
Baby name etymology + theme tagging, character era pools (Cyberpunk, Medieval, Roman, Egyptian, Norse), business industry vocabulary, Markov chain implementation, warrior cats extended prefix/suffix lists, and Turkish/Japanese/Viking/Slavic surname pools are hand-curated from publicly documented etymology references and naming conventions.
License compliance
For CC BY-SA 4.0 datasets we attribute the source above. We do not modify and redistribute the raw data; we sample from it at build time into our generator pools. If you would like more detail or believe an attribution is missing, email [email protected].
