About cyberpunk names
Cyberpunk as a genre emerged in the early 1980s with William Gibson’s Neuromancer (1984) and Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk tabletop RPG (1988). The genre established a naming convention that has barely changed since: short, punchy, often single-syllable names, frequently aliases / handles rather than birth names, with surnames that sound corporate, geographic, or invented.
Famous examples — Case, Molly Millions, Armitage, Wintermute, 3Jane, Maelcum (Gibson). Johnny Silverhand, V, Jackie Welles, Panam Palmer (Cyberpunk 2077). Trinity, Neo, Cipher, Switch (The Matrix). Each name is short, distinct, and feels like a street identity rather than a legal name.
How this generator works
Names come from the Character Name Generator with genre = cyberpunk locked:
- Male first names (~30 entries): Zev, Kade, Rikko, Vex, Cipher, Echo, Nyx, Onyx, Pyrex, Quill, Rax, Sterling, Talon, Vaughn, Wraith, Xander, Zephyr, Knox, Crane, Drift, Maverick, Phoenix, Ridge, Stark, Cole, Dax, Falco, Grit, Jett, Volt
- Female first names (~30 entries): Nyx, Vega, Pyx, Calix, Echo, Cypher, Solenne, Ember, Jinx, Onyx, Astra, Nova, Raven, Skye, Vex, Wren, Zara, Aria, Iris, Lyra, Storm, Tess, Vesper, Yara, Zia, Briar, Cinder, Drift, Glitch, Saint
- Surnames (~20 entries): Kale, Veshk, Drax, Sol, Vain, Stormbreak, Nightfall, Helix, Iron, Slate, Vector, Pulse, Static, Wraith, Pyre, Cipher, Drift, Locke, Vance, Voss
Output produces names like Vex Vance, Nyx Drax, Cipher Voss, Phoenix Iron. Notice the overlap between first names and surnames (e.g., Vex can be either) — that’s intentional for the genre’s “names as branding” feel.
Use cases
Cyberpunk tabletop games — Cyberpunk RED, Cyberpunk 2077, Shadowrun, The Sprawl, Blades in the Dark (cyberpunk variant). Player characters and NPCs all need handle-style names.
Sci-fi novelists writing near-future dystopian fiction. Neuromancer style, Snow Crash style, Altered Carbon style — these names fit any of those traditions.
Comic book writers — Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Transmetropolitan all use cyberpunk naming conventions.
Video game character creation — Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs, Deus Ex, System Shock players naming their characters.
Streamer / gamer handle — cyberpunk names work as actual usernames for sci-fi-leaning gamers.
Tips for picking
Shorter is better. Vex > Vexander. Cyberpunk names should be call-outable in a firefight. One or two syllables max.
Avoid traditional first + last patterns. Cyberpunk culture treats real names as something rarely revealed. Vex Kale sounds like a street name; Alexander Williamson III sounds wrong for the genre.
The “handle = identity” rule. Many cyberpunk characters go by ONE name (their handle), not two. Case (Neuromancer). V (Cyberpunk 2077). Trinity (Matrix). Drop the surname when it feels right.
Mix gender pools freely. Cyberpunk genre often blurs gender naming conventions — Wraith, Drift, Storm, Iron work for any character. The generator’s first-name pools have heavy overlap between male / female sets for this reason.
