Cyberpunk as a genre emerged in the early 1980s with William Gibson’s Neuromancer (1984) and Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk tabletop RPG (1988). The genre established a naming convention that has barely changed since: short, punchy, often single-syllable names, frequently aliases / handles rather than birth names, with surnames that sound corporate, geographic, or invented.

Output produces names like Vex Vance, Nyx Drax, Cipher Voss, Phoenix Iron. Notice the overlap between first names and surnames (e.g., Vex can be either) — that’s intentional for the genre’s “names as branding” feel.

Tips for picking

Shorter is better. Vex > Vexander. Cyberpunk names should be call-outable in a firefight. One or two syllables max.

Avoid traditional first + last patterns. Cyberpunk culture treats real names as something rarely revealed. Vex Kale sounds like a street name; Alexander Williamson III sounds wrong for the genre.

The “handle = identity” rule. Many cyberpunk characters go by ONE name (their handle), not two. Case (Neuromancer). V (Cyberpunk 2077). Trinity (Matrix). Drop the surname when it feels right.

Mix gender pools freely. Cyberpunk genre often blurs gender naming conventions — Wraith, Drift, Storm, Iron work for any character. The generator’s first-name pools have heavy overlap between male / female sets for this reason.
