About tiefling names
Tieflings are humans with infernal heritage — descended from a pact, possession, or supernatural event that left an indelible mark on their bloodline. In D&D 5e, they’re one of the most popular player races because of their distinctive look (horns, tails, unusual skin colors) and the dramatic narrative weight that comes with being “touched by darkness.”
Tiefling naming follows two parallel traditions:
-
Infernal-feeling personal names — Greek/Roman/Mediterranean-sounding (Akmenos, Damakos, Mordai, Lilith, Bryseis, Anakis) or specifically demonic (Skamos, Therai, Aym, Beleth). These come from infernal language conventions in published D&D material.
-
Virtue / concept names — Single-word names chosen later in life as a personal statement: Ambition, Carrion, Despair, Glory, Hope, Ideal, Music, Open, Quest, Random, Reverence, Sorrow, Torment, Wrath. About 25% of generated names use the virtue style, reflecting how often this naming choice appears in D&D lore.
How this generator works
Names come from the D&D 5e Player’s Handbook tiefling name list:
- Male personal names (~18 entries): Akmenos, Amnon, Barakas, Damakos, Ekemon, Iados, Kairon, Leucis, Melech, Mordai, Morthos, Pelaios, Skamos, Therai, Cazsiel, Drosis, Phrygian
- Female personal names (~18 entries): Akta, Anakis, Bryseis, Criella, Damaia, Ea, Kallista, Lerissa, Makaria, Nemeia, Orianna, Phelaia, Rieta, Aym, Beleth, Lilith, Saphira, Velira
- Virtue concept names (~22 entries): the abstract single-word names tieflings sometimes adopt
The 25% chance of returning a virtue-only name reflects the canonical lore — not every tiefling renames themselves, but many do.
Use cases
D&D players creating tiefling characters. The race is consistently in the top-5 most-played per Wizards of the Coast surveys.
Fantasy fiction with characters of unusual / supernatural heritage — half-demons, hexed bloodlines, cursed families. The names fit any “marked by the supernatural” character.
Tabletop wargames with diabolic-themed factions (Warhammer Daemons, AoS, Pathfinder devils). Tiefling personal names work for lieutenant-level characters in these forces.
Dark fantasy / horror writing — the virtue names especially (Sorrow, Torment, Wrath) work for atmospheric character names in horror or dark fantasy settings.
Tips for picking
Personal vs. virtue — pick the right vibe. A tiefling pirate captain who chose her name after escaping enslavement might be “Wrath.” A tiefling court mage who never thought about renaming might still be “Damaia.” Context matters.
Virtue names work as monikers / titles. Some tieflings use a virtue name as a secondary title — “Damaia, called Mercy” — combining both traditions.
Don’t mix with angelic / divine names. Tieflings are infernal-coded; aasimar (their celestial counterpart) use different name conventions.
Skip the surname. Tieflings typically use one name — first OR virtue, not both. Surnames feel out of place.
