Ships have been named for as long as humans have built them. The naming conventions vary dramatically by purpose: military naval ships carry national pride and martial gravity (HMS Victory, USS Enterprise). Pirate ships carry roguish identity (The Black Pearl, Queen Anne’s Revenge). Merchant ships carry hope, fortune, or poetic intent (The Golden Compass, SS Albatross). Spaceships in sci-fi carry mythological or cosmic resonance (Millennium Falcon, USS Voyager, UNS Helios).

This generator produces names across all four conventions via a mode selector.

How this generator works

Four modes with distinct patterns:

Naval mode — Formal Navy Conventions

Format: [Prefix] [Noun] where prefix is a national registry callsign and noun is heroic or nature-themed.

• Prefixes: HMS (UK), USS (US), HMAS (Australia), HMCS (Canada), RFA (UK auxiliary), FNS (France)
• Nouns: Valiant, Defiant, Victory, Enterprise, Falcon, Eagle, Albatross, Tiger
• Output: HMS Valiant, USS Defiant, HMCS Albatross

Pirate mode — Roguish Identity

Format: The [Adj] [Noun] or The [Iconic Phrase].

• Pattern 1 (~45%): “The [Adj] [Noun]” — The Black Reaper, The Crimson Cutlass
• Pattern 2 (~25%): “The [iconic phrase]” — The Black Pearl, The Wicked Wench
• Pattern 3 (~20%): “The [Noun]” — The Reaper, The Scourge
• Pattern 4 (~10%): “[Adj] [Poetic Noun]” — Bloody Compass, Wild Memory

Merchant mode — Civilian Commerce

Format: [Prefix] [Noun] or The [Poetic Adj] [Poetic Noun].

• Prefixes: SS (Steamship), MV (Motor Vessel), MS (Motor Ship), RMS (Royal Mail Ship)
• Pattern 1 (~50%): “SS Albatross”, “MV Falcon”
• Pattern 2 (~50%): “The Golden Compass”, “The Lucky Star”

Spaceship mode — Sci-fi Convention

Format: [Prefix] [Noun] with sci-fi prefix and mythological / cosmic noun.

• Prefixes: UNS, USS, UNSC, ISV, CSS, EAS, TSF, SSV (drawn from various sci-fi franchises)
• Nouns: 60% sci-fi (Helios, Andromeda, Discovery, Voyager), 30% heroic (Vanguard, Defiant), 10% poetic (Horizon, Hope)
• Output: UNS Helios, ISV Andromeda, TSF Vanguard

Use cases

Pirate fiction and games — Sea of Thieves, Skull and Bones, Black Sails. Pirate ships are characters in their own right; generator output fits.

Sci-fi worldbuilding — Mass Effect, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, The Expanse. Spaceship fleets need named vessels.

Naval historical fiction — Master and Commander, Hornblower, Sharpe. Generator produces era-appropriate naval ship names.

D&D / fantasy naval campaigns — Many D&D modules involve naval combat (Saltmarsh, Stormwreck Isle). Pirate or merchant mode fits.

Video game ships — No Man’s Sky, Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, Eve Online. Players naming their personal fleet.

Fanfic across franchises — Star Wars / Star Trek / Mass Effect fanfic writers needing original ship names that fit the franchise feel.

Tips for picking

Match mode to setting. Don’t use HMS prefix for a pirate ship or a spaceship — the prefix carries cultural meaning specific to its mode.

Iconic ship names are reserved. Generator output avoids canonical franchise ships (Millennium Falcon, USS Enterprise, Black Pearl) — those are protected. Output gives you names IN THE STYLE OF these famous ships.

Sound out the full name. “HMS Defiant” rolls easily. “ISV Astralemorpheus” doesn’t. Pick names that work spoken.

For pirate ships, drama matters. Pirate ship names are part of the captain’s brand. The Black Pearl suits Jack Sparrow. The Salty Misfortune suits a comedy character. Match the name to the character.

For spaceships, mythology helps. Greek and Roman names (Hyperion, Andromeda, Apollo) feel sci-fi without being franchise-specific. They’ve been used in real space programs (Apollo missions) and fiction equally.
